As of March 25, featured performer submissions to the 2011 Theatrical Bellydance Conference are closed. There are plenty of open stage performance slots available. If you’d like to be an open stage performer, please indicate in the drop-down menu when you register. Thanks!
CALL TO PERFORMERS
We are looking for particularly strong solo, duo or group numbers in any bellydance or related folk dance or fusion style, or unusual theatrical presentations that employ some of the conventions of bellydance or related dance forms, or mixed genre work to round out the programs for the theater stage shows at DNA. We’ll be selecting approximately FIVE to TEN such pieces to add to our programs, depending on available program space and on the quality of submissions we receive. Solo or duo pieces proposed should be no longer than 5-6 minutes; group pieces may be 6-8 minutes maximum; shorter pieces are fine too of course.
If you are selected as a featured performer:
You will receive 25% off of the full conference registration (at the rate that is current when you register/process payment) or 25% off of any daylong package or a-la-carte workshops for which you register if you live within 1000 miles (1609 kilometers) of DNA theater in Manhattan; if you live more than 1000 miles from the conference, you are eligible for a 50% off coupon, and if you live more than 2500 miles away (4023 kilometers), you are eligible for a 75% off coupon. If you have already registered and paid for the conference at the time of your submission and you are selected for a DNA show, you’ll receive an appropriate partial refund if selected. These discounts apply to all members of groups selected through the submissions process to be featured at DNA. We will also provide video services for the show so you can receive a copy of your performance in the beautiful space.
In addition your solo or group photo, bio, and website will be on our website listing of featured performers and in any festival programs and show advertising.
* Please note that discounts for featured performances and elective presentations are not cumulative. That means if you are selected to be both a presenter and a performer, you will receive the larger of the two discounts, not a combined discount.
If your application is not selected for presentation at a DNA show:
You will automatically receive priority for an open stage slot if you plan to attend at least 2 days of the conference and register by the early deadline (April 15), so you can have an opportunity to show your work (the piece you submit or a different work if you prefer) at the event. Priority for all other open stage slots will go to those taking 3 or 4 full days of the conference, first-come first-served in order of registrations and expressing your interest in a performance slot. Any slots still available after June 15 will be given out on a lottery basis, closer to the conference.
Criteria that the panel will evaluate on for DNA shows
Theatricality (interest as part of a stage show), inventiveness, technical ability and execution, stage presence/confidence, overall professional impression
The DNA Space
Please visit DNA to view the theater, or look at our 2010 selections video (to be posted soon on our site), for an idea of the space. There is plenty of space for large groups, and up to three different lighting moods per piece can be used. If you are selected, you must be able e-mail us lighting requirements and piece descriptions in advance (adhering to our deadlines for this information) and to be available for tech rehearsal at the theater in advance of your performance day or time, and we will be on a tight schedule for those tech rehearsals. :)
TO SUBMIT:
E-mail the following elements in one or two e-mails to: submissions@theatricalbellydance.com
- 1) Post a video of your proposed performance piece (up to 5 minutes of video, in one or at most two un-edited clips) at Vimeo. Alternately, you may post one or two clips of a work similar to the piece you intend to perform or representative of your work or the work of your group. (if you are not yet on Vimeo, you may need to set up a new account—it’s easy to do.)
If you have a problem submitting on Vimeo, you may post on http://youtube.com, but the quality/resolution on Vimeo is better, so we may be able to see you better if you go that route.) Then e-mail us the link to your video. Please check it to make sure the link works. If you prefer, Vimeo and Youtube have private settings where you can protect your video with a password. Just make sure to email us the password!
2) A short description of your proposed performance piece (80 words maximum)
3)A short bio of you or your group (150 words maximum)
4) Your personal and/or group website link(s)
5) Two hi-resolution photos of yourself and/or your group (specifications: at least 500-1000 pixels on a side, preferably photos with a dark background/backdrop if you have them; if you don’t have two photos of this description, submit two photos as close to this as possible with your application—it won’t be the deciding factor in your submission, but if you are selected, we will want to put up your photo on our site quickly, so send what you would like to represent you).
6) A resume or C.V., which includes dates/years/locations of your dance/theater/performance activities
7) Your complete street address and at least one phone number where you can be reached
8) An application fee of $15 per application is required, to cover our administrative costs. You can go onto our online store: www.theatricalbellydance.com/register to pay fee(s).
